From ARRL;

Hurricane Florence, now a Category 4 Hurricane, is traveling towards the
East Coast, and has a high probability of impacting the entire Roanoke
Division.  South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia have already
declared a state of emergency, preparing for a hurricane that may
approach a category 5 when it makes landfall this Thursday.  There is a
cone of probability as to where it will strike, but Vice Director Bill
N2COP lives in Wilmington, NC where he is expecting a storm surge of
12-15 feet.  He will be busy preparing his residence for the storm, and
will be heading inland for safety within the next few days.

ARRL Headquarters has been in communication with Section Managers (SM)
and Section Emergency Coordinators (SEC) of the affected coastal states.
Ham Aid Kits have already been requested by South Carolina, and ARRL HQ
is expecting to hear from Virginia tomorrow.

There are mandatory evacuations scheduled over the next two days.
Remember that automobile traffic will be heavy around the mandatory
evacuation times, and alternate routes may be limited.  If you are under
mandatory evacuation orders, leaving the area would be best sooner than
later.

Well the storm is hooking south and it looks like Virginia will be in the clear.  Now Georgia needs to be concerned!

They are opening the motor speedway to allow campers from down south to stay while they are evaced.

Dunno about the location of the speedway... However with an estimated 24" of rain possible if that speedway does not drain well or the surrounding area, it could become one big swimming pool Shocked

Noting the actions of Katrina is a good example of poor drainage inland...

May all be safe in this emergency.

Chas, I've been at the speedway and have the same thoughts as you.

This thing keeps changing direction, we really don't know where it's going to go!

Well, right now they are expecting 1.35 inches rainfall in our area which includes the track.  all the paths I see on the map concur so far.  I know things can change though.

I know the weather service likes to get ahead of itself but they now predict the storm to be in Pennsylvania next Tuesday!

I am keeping you two in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.  I hope you both survive the storm without damage.  I know Rex is not quite as exposed as you are, Larry, but still could get lots of rain out of the storm.  Keep your heads down and stay dry.....

We fortunately got out of the storm, but will be hot and dry this week.  I see the storm hit with a vengeance and those without power were in the millions.  Businesses here are doing things to accomodate any evacuees.

The storm is going all around us.  We are very overcast without even a breeze or any rain other than a mist.   We are very lucky!

I'm so glad we are now out of the 90's!   We still have a lot of humidity but it's gone down into the 70's.

Days like these makes that extra A/C unit a good investment.

I don't know how I lived without AC in the past.   I guess when you're young you can handle a lot more discomfort.

When I was 28 and living in Utah, the A/C failed one day and it stressed me so badly I had a bad case of shingles come on me.  That was really a good time!

When you are younger, you can do LOTS of things you can't do now!  I remember we thought we were walking in tall cotton when we got a whole-house fan for the attic.

Won't be long.  I tentatively start at the store in AZ on October 27.  We got down there the first week in October last year and got in some of the hot weather.  This should get us out of 100 degree days, but be before the snow flies in the north country of AZ and NM.

I hope you, Rex and I can connect more this winter than we have in the recent past.  This has been a short summer.

I am going to do a component by component restoration on my Stereo Theater's TV chassis this winter.  There is a guy on VK who did that to a Predicta and I decided to do that with a Magnavox.  Change every cap that is not ceramic and every resistor.  Wonder if it will work when I get it done?

I'll bet that will correct any drift problem the unit could have.

The TV guys recommend you replace a cap, fire up the TV, see how it works, then discharge the CRT and do the next one.  That sounded like too much work.  I saw the Predicta thread where the caps were shotgunned and all was well on power up.  I just hope I don't totally ruin it.  Embarassed Embarassed
