PostSubject: Rca T-62 Question on repair   2012-08-27, 8:06 am

I was wondering if any of you guys Ever repaired a Rca T-62 Radio>?? I am currently trying to restore one for a friend but i had to change the RF can and Now I am in the process of replaceing the 2 caps below that go to the Filtercan on top of the chassis. My question is this I am not sure if it will work or not because of the changes of the RF Coil. However if i can get some help determing the proper hook up places for the caps from the can any help is appreciated
Thanks from will

What filter can are you referring to C22-C23?

Are you referring to C7 as far as the cap for the (RF) Antenna coil? Is it in a can?

Or are you referring to one of the IF cans.
What two caps are you referring to below the RF can?
-------------------------------------
Putting those questions aside. Is the RF coil you replaced an equivalent or just another scrap one.
Can you measure the antenna coil resistance? Is it the same as the schematic values? Most coils are generic except maybe the oscillator coil, depending frequencies used, The IF coils are all traps to remove the RF frequency and only allow the oscillator frequency to pass. So all caps for the IF cans are usually the same range. You can replace those caps with a fixed value and it will work, Its just the caps are normally trimmers to fine tune. Usually 4-30 Pfds.
--------------------------------
If this Coil supports both AM and Shortwave Frequencies there should be a cap for Each band, However I see only one which in the schematic is .05MFD

More details are needed However, picture of the old and the new wiring and parts both old and new.

Hello Cliff good to hear from you once again
it is the single cap can on top of the chassis this is the first question The 2 question is if i have 2 exact cans on the RF they should work on there bolth 455 KC The wireing is so brittle meaning the rubber coating in these old radios as you may know already just falls off from the age
this is not my radio it is my friends and i like to get it going should i seek help from my antiqueradioclub here in mass>
Thanks I want to bring it back in good working order I am so darn confused ill show pics soon.
Many Thanks from william

Ist off Never turn on a radio till the filter caps have been replaced, period
2nd test the tubes especially for shorts.

OK first there is only one cap can on the top, and it is a dual cap for filtering the rectified AC to DC. I would just leave it in place to look original and clip the lead under the chassis and substitute those with axial caps, if you have enough room. Since the wire lengths for those caps are not critical you can replace the wires with a little extra length but watch the polarity. Or they will blow up on you, they must replace the caps in the can. You could mount them on top as a last resort.
--------------
The RF -Antenna coil isn't mounted in a can. The IF cans have coils inside that are tuned to 455 KC and have to have matched trimmers or mica caps. I would use middle of the range caps on replacements. There is a good example of this on the web, I will see if I can find it for you.
