Although it depends on the trimmers. And if you can seperate the caps without total dissasembly. Silver cleaner in liquid form may work using an ultrasonic cleaner.
Thanks, Cliff!

Fired this radio up yesterday, it plays ok, just a little afraid to tackle the silver mica problem!

Yes, I wired it back, just like it came ,for a battery. I could use another plug, as mine is broken.
Thanks, Rickey

Hello!
How did you wire the Radiola B-52 for a battery/DC transformer? What is voltage? I have a round plug with four wires. Then another two elsewhere - maybe antennae?
Thank you.

If it is the tuning cap that's scratchy if you can remove it, and set it in the dishwasher for a good cleaning. Another way to solve a noisy problem is to apply high AC voltage of 500-700 Volts, to burn off dust and dirt and use a series resistor to keep current down to prevent the transformer from burning up. If there are any whiskers they will burn off,or use an ohmmeter and test for shorted plates while rotating the shaft. You can also make sure there is correct spacing between the rotor plates, and clean with pipe cleaners between the plates. Wink

It has the grounding strap.

Usually the scratchiness is caused by either the tuner plates are shorting or the tuning capacitor has a grounding finger that touches the rotating shaft that needs cleaning. sometimes the capacitors are insulated from the chassis, and have a grounding braid. That was done to prevent vibration related howling effecting reception. Look for a wire that may be loose even though connected to the cap.

If its sounds like static you may have to look at the silver mica caps for silver migration.

Well I got It rewired. The radio works good with my home brew batteries. The only problem is tuner capacitor is a little finicky. It seem to be scratchy when I tune around the band.
Thanks, Rickey

Thanks,Cliff! The radio looks untouched, just brittle wires.

Your going to want to replace brittle insulation definitely. if the wires are going to switch and tube connections rather than remove the entire length of wire leave enough wire to wrap the new wire to. That will help avoid damaging tie-points, lead connectors as they become very brittle and any motion to removing wires will possibly cause parts to be damaged that cannot be replaced easily. Be sure and replace each wire as to length and position. If the wiring is modified from originality you may introduce problems with squealing caused by induction and feedback. Take your time and take several photos from different angles for wiring accuracy. also note in photos parts positions. Look for cold solder joints (frosty silver looking), all connections should be mirror type finish solder. Use eutectic solder is easier as it takes less time to set. Don't move wires till the solder has cooled or you will get fractured and cold solder joints.

I'm going to try and refurbish this farm radio. The battery sets seem interesting to me. The radio electronics are basically untouched, but the wiring is brittle. Any tips on the process would be appreciated. I am going to make a battery for it, also. The skeleton head is where I put my hot soldering iron! Lol ,my son made it years ago.
Thanks , Rickey
