My old stand by computer is crashing, and, I need help.
Until a week ago it was doing fine.
A week ago hard drive wouldn't start. It just kept beeping at me.
Once, no, twice, I was able to get it to start, then, it crashed again.
Today, I tried it again. It worked, but, not great, and, it was extremely slow.
Tried doing a microsoft virus scan, and, gave up after two hours, and, only going to 1 percent.
Tried doing a defrag. It was on it for two hours, and, only got twentry percent done.

It is hard to shut it down, and, takes forever to shut down....
What's going on?

Take your computer apart and clean it. Sounds like it may be loaded with dust bunnies, or your hard drive is starting to fail.
Run a couple of programs called CCleaner and Glary Utilities and both are free, and you just click on automatic choices. No need to be technically oriented to run them.
also run a program called Check disk, its a built-in Microsoft utility you type into the run box. I think it is spelled CHKDS .

If it has been a while since you have had it loaded it may very well need cleaning and virus checking. Chkdsk is what Cliff was thinking bout. I work on these and from what you described I would do the cleaning and chkdsk first. Then if that didn't help I would probably go with a new drive. It could be also low memory but cleaning it should help. I work mainly on Apples but I do occasionally see Windows. Most of what I do is hardware though. I would highly suggest ot back up all the pictures and docs you want to keep ASAP. Another thing I suggest to everyone is to invest in one of the small USB hard drives. These are USB cases that hold a hard drive in them. I use that to back up everything. But Cliff is right on the money as far as cleaning, running the virus checkers/chkdsk and then looking at the drive.
