I installed a FREE Video converter to work with making Windows Media player a player for my DVD disk Video. It was home made family movies. The original films were spliced together, with a lot of scenery shot from a car window, but also had several clips of my parents, family and such. I ran across windows movie maker to do the editing but it doesn't work with VOB type files. So I found a file converter.
Now here the part that gets interesting they installed hijacking software to redirect to a different search engine. One of the subtleties that happened was a popup window that required a java update. No way to get out of the popup, even the red X allows the malware to be installed.
OK? Now what to do?
Well I ran CCleaner, didn't work,Ran Malwarebytes - seem to stop it, found 50 some suspicious files, Had to go through it twice to remove because of my operational ignorance. Did a Registry clean with CCleaner afterwards and then Defrag., shutdown and restarted the computer to take effect.
So It happens again with a different redirect, Same process done to delete, only this time over 170 bad files. Then found out that Nortons has a free program called Norton Power eraser, ran that it removed rootkits. Restarted computer and now its back to working normally.
