I got my Halicrafters and Musaphonic from the same guy also. It was at an auto show and I got them for $5 each. My Halicrafters is an S38-D with octal tubes. With the S38E they went to 7 pin minis. Buy the time they made the S120 it was down to 4 tubes!

The neighbors know me as "that old radio guy" and they frequently deposit radios in front of my garage door. A couple weeks ago, a local man who mows lawns gave me a bunch of stuff that belonged to this recently-deceased dad. One of them was a pretty nice Hallicrafters SX-110. And a little blue GE C421A "Musaphonic" clock radio. I just finished taking the GE apart and cleaning the cabinet and changing all the caps. Pretty good performer for an AA6 clock radio.

I have my business card in several antique shops in the area. One most unusual places to find old tube radios is at auto flea markets. I am a vendor at one of the largest auto flea markets in the east, Carlisle Productions. I always find old radios (besides car radios) on the fair grounds. I picked up a Halicrafters S-38d and a GE Musaphonic clock radio for $5 each!

Cliff,
Its Sams 113-8 according to the online index.
I have it in the storage trailer.
Do you want me to try and scan it and email it to you, or photocopy it?
It is out of copyright from all I have read.

Old radios, even older transistor sets have just about disappeared from my area for some reason. By older, I'm talking about AM only transistor sets. AM/FM transistors sets can still be found, but around here, even that selection leaves lots to be desired as most of them are pretty beat up at best.

Even my preferred choice of the local Freecycle has pretty much dried up. I've had none at all in over a year. I don't stop looking, because if I did, that's when one will slip by me, I am sure.

Oh well, half the fun is in the search, I guess.  Very Happy

The best places to find antique radios are where you can actually see & examine them. Thrift stores, antique shops, local swap meets especially are great. Ebay is fine as long as the seller knows how to pack a radio for safe shipping.

PostSubject: Re: Finding old Radios   Finding old Radios I_icon_minitimeMarch 3rd 2012, 5:01 pm

Back in the early 70s I had arrangements with smaller thrift shops to take any radio, table or smaller for a fixed price. I had some weeks where there were 8 or 9 and some with none. I shied away from "consoles" or "floor" models to eliminate the 600 pound radio/phono furniture. Of course I'm sure I missed out on some of the giant Zeniths with the "cigar cutter" dials. This scheme produced some nice finds, including portables, at no more than 5 bucks a clip. My last venture was to pay a small amount to have "first crack" at any old looking radios that came in. A very nice place in SW CT came up with some nice pieces. I haven't done it in 8-9years, but that arrangement may be viable, especially if you can deal with the actual owner/manager. The last hold out from my beginning years is a pretty nice RCA 66X8 catalin, in red marble. The second to last was a Hallicrafters Sky Rider Marine, that I took the tuning cap and drive out to stick in my crystal set late last year.
I did have one Grundig "Sattelit" straight from the "debris recycling center" where I used to live. I traded the attendant a few pounds of copper pipe for it.

Most grundigs are usually demanding premium prices, but be wary!!! They are all over priced. If you can see it in the inside, go ahead and stick your nose therin. If it reeks of burned components back away or offer no more than 10-15 dollars. And mention since they no longer offer parts it would be a major project to fix. I would say no. If the cabinet is pristine then it may be worth it. Thats a judgment call.

PostSubject: Found A console (SEARS) Silvertone 9108   Finding old Radios I_icon_minitimeJuly 29th 2011, 6:58 am

It was in a Antique store.

The cabinet is in bad shape on one side. the paint is so bad its flaked off in a lot of spots,Its a radio-phono combination. AM-FM monaural. Push buttons.

The Model is a 9108. If anyone has a schematic of it from photofacts, I would like to get a emailed copy please . I browsed a lot for one on the web, its not in Beitmans or Riders. Someone provided a link for the schematic
It has Loctal tubes (6 ?). Paid $10, I figured the tubes are worth that if they work.

Another project to tackle later. LOL
The turntable even has the needle. I think its a 78 speed. It has a 6 or 8 inch electromagnetic speaker.

Excellent Idea, never thought of that. Alas we have no local trade radio shows.

Thanks for the information Cliff. One thing I did locally. I made up some buisiness cards with my info on collecting of vintage radios and passed them around to several antique stores and flea market people in my area.
Also we have a Tradio show on the local station during the week and I have called in and told them I am looking for old radios to pick up or buy. I have some success with good prices.

PostSubject: Things about radios to consider   Finding old Radios I_icon_minitimeMarch 18th 2011, 7:20 pm

The condition of the radio may be the prime factor in choosing to buy or not to buy a set.
Some things in this list may be more important that may relate to cost vs. desirability..

One of the first things to look for in a radio is if all the knobs are present . Also note if any of the knobs are different or missing, ask the question can these be replaced with the originals .

The next thing to look for is if the dial is in place or missing . If the dial is missing, or broken, is there a replaceable one to get ? If it has a glass dial, look to see if the numbers are flaking off , if that is a case then it would be best to avoid that radio , unless you have the skills to copy the dial using a photo copier or scanner.

If you see a radio that has tubes missing , make sure that they are of the more common type of tubes. The cost of replacing an electron tube can be expensive . If you can look in the back of the radio and see us that is not a problem, as that can be cleaned up . If you notice rust and it may be more of a challenge to clean . If you notice that any of the parts are damaged you may have a hard time replacing them .

There are several types of electron tubes to look for , they have several different pin configurations. The first pin style consisted of four, than five , six , seven , eight , and nine . Most electron tubes are made of glass , however some are made of ceramic or metal . Some of the older types had a metal cap on top and we're called grid caps . Most of the higher pin count tubes are from newer sets, these are usually easier to find and less cost .

One of the things you need to do if you want to find a radio that you are interested in , is to research a little bit about radios in general . Some Of the questions to ask our what is the age of the radio , what is the condition of the cabinet, what is the model number , how many tubes does the radio have ?

You need to ask yourself also what type of radio and my going to collect , is it a table radio , is it a console radio, what is my price range , am i willing to do extensive repairs? , or just get it working .

Is the radio made of plastic , bake light , catlin, solid woods, veneers or photo finished?

I will continue this at a later time.
Any additional thoughts or questions?, go a head and comment.

Sometimes Relatives will have them stashed away, and could be yours for the asking.

I had the Fortune of one of my co-workers getting ready to retire, and He offered me His GE Super radio, for $20 in about 1990. Since then I have collected 2 more, each a different model from a local 2nd hand store, my last one was only $8 Very Happy They all have wonderful tone and very good distance reception. If I ever find an old Wooden table radio with no innards, I may just take one of the Super Radios and Make it into a Franken Radio for fun, Just an Idea at this point.

Hi all,

I've had decent luck getting free radios from my local Freecycle group. I just posted a request for AM & FM tube radios as well as AM only transistor sets.

Over the last 2 years, I've added 8 radios to my collection this way. Can't beat the price, not to mention that these might have gone to landfill otherwise. Smile

Cheers, Bob
