I worked on many pocket and table battery powered radios and found a common problem with a "No sound" complaint.

Tracing the audio I would find the coupling cap to the volume control was open. Replacing it restored the audio.

Sometimes the earphone switching jack would also get bent or broken, opening the connection, but most often it was the coupling capacitor. (It is easy to overlook the earphone jack as being a problem. )
