Pretty close to its path, but when you've seen one then ???
people used to use smoked glass, or welding glasses, or make a cardboard pinhole and either project it unto a white sheet, or put some wax paper on the opposite end of the cardboard camera.
Or you could do what i did. while at work I mounted a dental inspection mirror outside of a window so that the sun's image was seen on a wall. Then as the moon passed by you could see it on the wall. I mounted a piece of paper and drew the outlines at 1 minute intervals, dated it and still have the copy.
