| Subject: Replacement IF Transformers. February 20th 2021, 3:58 pm | |
| Merit was another coil maker that made replacement specific IF transformers along with general purpose Antenna, RF, OSC, and IF coils; also RF chokes. There were many other coil makers as well. Some of these types would have been made for only a few years. A lot of the old coil catalogs have a section that list sets by the manufacturer and model number. If any replacement coils were available they will be listed there. These coils and transformers still turn up today unused. Good luck. 73, Rod WB6FBF |

| GC also offered an assortment of ferrite cores for replacement use. Does your set look like it uses American made IF coils or Japanese? The various service parts suppliers offered some exact replacement IF transformers. Examples are from Workman; and the coil suppliers Meissner and Gramer-Halldorson. Thordarson made some exact replacements for TV coils. Not sure if J.W. Miller did or not. There were several other smaller suppliers too that might have put out the coil you need. Finding any of these items for sale now will be a matter of looking around and waiting till something comes along you can use. Good luck. 73, Rod WB6FBF P.S. It's possible that a very similar IF coil could be found in other solid state AM/FM radios of the period. Also, a dual IF can was commonly used for the ratio detector stage in a transistor FM radio. |

| 2 ferrites in one can. Those are quite hard to find.
Depending on how bad you broke it, GC/ General Cement makes a ferrite cement or ferrite glue. It does work. You will have to re-align the radio after the repair though.
Were you using a flat metal screwdriver to try to adjust the can with? or a metal hex wrench? If so, you should only use plastic tools. Ferrite cores are VERY brittle.
Remove the IFT and use a GENTLE amount of heat from a hair dryer or heat gun to free up the core. Stuck cores can be a nightmare.
You might try to find a junk radio that has the same size & color core and see if the core will work. Often the color of the core could denote a certain ferrite mix, or just denote it was different from the other for alignment purposes. I have very little in Motorola solid state IF stuff, if any at all, other than TV stuff & xistors.
Sometimes in the old parts asst. bags things like that turn up. I will look in storage next trip to see if by any chance I might have one. I do remember getting a few IFT's in a junk bag 20 yrs or so back. No idea where I put them though, if I even saved them, or just what was in the pile. |

| Motorola has been out of the consumer electronics business for some time now, with any currently available consumer products in name only. You might go through some of these, as they are some of the only discrete coils of that vintage I know of. They carry the stocks of a few defunct electronics suppliers. Good luck.
