Thanks Cliff. Quite interesting.
IIRC there is also a solid state circuit I have seen to replace the 1L6.
I am fortunate enough to have a few NOS left to repair sets here.
The 1LA6 mod works quite well.
There is one person selling an "adaptor" for $25.00. He makes them himself, and they are just a hack job. I had to totally rebuild the one the store bought to put into a customers radio, as he had almost all the wires from the loctal socket to the "cut off the junk tube" 7 pin tube base he used were totally uninsulated and they were twisted and shorted together, plus the 1LA6 he included was deader than a rock. It would not even move the needle of the tube tester! Also the soldering was horrible.
Make your own adaptor. Several sites sell the 7 pin base plug, and many old relays used that same base.
