Pilot Lights Empty
PostSubject: Pilot Lights   Pilot Lights I_icon_minitimeDecember 20th 2023, 12:36 am

A word of warning:

If you need to replace a pilot light in an AA5 radio or any set that uses the pilot light coming off the tap on the rectifier tube, you really need to replace it with the exact same
number bulb.

Why? Because part of the rectifier heater current flows through the pilot lamp, and failure to replace the pilot lamp with the correct type will cause early rectifier failure.
The heater of many rectifiers, like the 35W4, 35Z5, and others have a tap on the filament of the tube. The proper bulb balances out the current flow in the heater.

I had considered using an LED replacement in a set, then realized the problem this would cause.

BUT: You can use a LED bulb replacement in a PARALLEL FILAMENT set just fine, as it is not part of the rectifier circuit, as long as no other bulbs are in series with it.

You may have to find an LED replacement of the correct brightness to make the radio illumination proper.

Also this reduces the current draw on a transformer powered set, and should lengthen the life of the transformer because of the reduced current draw, and the transformer should run a bit cooler.
